Rigby Impresses in Practice Sessions

February 6th, 2007

Some say it's just practice but don't tell that to Jason "Hod" Rigby. It's a tradition for the Race For Victory to run the 'races before the race'. Practice sessions are a great way for drivers to shake off the cobwebs of winter and get that first inkling of how things might go. For Rigby, it looks like business as usual as in the last two practice races he's taken his Air Force Chevy from the back of the pack to the front with relative ease. Now this isn't to say that Hod's got everyone covered. Drivers like Mike Kelley, Rob Cole, and Brett Molzahn might have something to say about the outcome when the checkers fall come Sunday.

The races have been mixed. There have been three races thus far. The first race only had a handful of drivers and was a pretty stout challenge that only saw one caution. Rigby came away with the win after a pit altercation between Kelly and Rigby left Kelly on the sidelines. The second practice race featured a torrid battle between Cole, Kelly, Rigby and Molzahn. It was Cole who ended up on top. The 2006 USRL Cup champion won 7 races last year enroute the title and is going to be a driver to contend with. Unfortunately for Cole his second practice race (the third race ran)would end early with engine failure.

Speaking of the most recent practice race, well it was mired with cautions. 12 cautions held the pace back but a familiar pattern developed. Hod Rigby navigated from deep in the pack once again to a win via a last lap pass. Officials might question whether there was a jump there one the final restart. Had it been a formal race a review would have been in order but as it was, it was only about bragging rights and the win was left to stand. Hod zipped past an impressive but disappointed Jack Martel in turn one in a last lap shootout and held everyone at bay to take the win. Martel made his presence known as he led the most laps on the evening. Hailing from the stout Renegade Jr. League, it might be a good idea to keep an eye peeled for this Maine driver in the final. He's clearly got the skills to get the job done.

One final nod goes to NASS's Dennis Blauch. Dennis put in a solid showing and had he not been blocked in on that final restart, he could have very easily have come away with the victory in the 2/7 practice race. It would be nice to see this up and coming driver break out in the RFV and put his mark as a serious contender.

The fourth and final practice race will be Friday evening. Then drivers will get serious with their efforts to get past qualifying and into the main event. Keep your eyes posted here for updates and race coverage.
